These documents contain additional information to help you in the assessment of the work. The primary purpose of your review is to provide feedback on the soundness of the research reported. This will help authors to improve their manuscript and editors to reach a decision. We do not ask that you make a recommendation regarding publication, but you can set out the arguments for and against publication if you so wish.
Elements of a reviewer report In your report, please comment on the following aspects of the manuscript. Key results Your overview of the key messages of the study, in your own words, highlighting what you find significant or notable. Usually, this can be summarized in a short paragraph. Validity Your evaluation of the validity and robustness of the data interpretation and conclusions. Significance Your view on the potential significance of the conclusions for the field and related fields.

Be prepared to try, fail, then try again with a slightly different angle, better evidence or a crisper argument for your opinion. If you are struggling to get placement in a large publication, consider a smaller, local one. Op-Ed writing can be an art that takes time to refine. However, op-ed writing has an important role in changing climate policy.
Op-eds can help with that. And they aren't alone. The exotic pet trade is a significant source of non-native creatures, according to a new paper. As a result, cynics have been trying to sniff out those manipulations and expose frauds for the same amount of time. As editing tools have progressed, the methods for snooping out sneaky edits has lagged behind—at least outside of areas like law enforcement and image forensics.
Recently, the company announced some research in conjunction with UC Berkeley that's designed to detect changes made to a face using a feature built into Photoshop called Face Aware Liquify. There's still a long way to go before you can point a piece of software at a photo and get a foolproof answer about its authenticity, but projects like this may be essential as we encounter more and more of the convincing, but fraudulent, videos knowns as deepfakes.
In fact, the company already released data about techniques that focus on more common image editing techniques like splicing images together, removing objects from a photo, or copy-and-pasting one area of an image into another spot.
All of these are well-known fakery strategies. Liquifying an image allows you to push and pull the pixels around. Several versions ago, however, Adobe announced Face Aware Liquify which uses AI to recognize individual elements on the face and allows retouchers to easily manipulate variables like the size and shape of the eyes, nose, and mouth. Humans could identify the modified photo about 53 percent of the time, but the neural network reportedly achieved roughly 99 percent accuracy.
Beyond that, the AI could also sometimes undo the edits to get an approximation of the original using a combination of clues like distortion caused by the original warp effects. Hany Farid, a computer science professor from UC Berkeley recently told the Washington Post that researchers trying to detect deepfake videos are outnumbered to 1 by those working on making the videos more convincing and harder to sniff out.
Also, expect to see more faked images and videos. Finally, the researchers arrived at the exact spot where, two years prior, they'd discovered what appeared to be a new species of bush tomato—one that defied all sexual convention. Even so, he struggled to make sense of these particular specimens, which seemed to display a different sex every time researchers took a look.
Scientists already believe we are soon on course for an ice-free Arctic , which will only accelerate global warming. Back in , even Fox News reported scientists' warnings that the Earth's sixth mass extinction was underway. Erik Buitenhuis, a senior researcher at the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, tells me that Bendell's conclusions may sound extreme, but he agrees with the report's overall assessment.
The important thing, Buitenhuis says, is to realise that the negative effects of climate change have already been with us for some time: "Further gradual deterioration looks much more likely to me than a disaster within the next ten years that will be big enough that, after that, everybody will agree the status quo is doomed.
And more and more people are. What does he mean by harm? However, if you look at what's been happening over the last few years, it isn't an anomaly. There's a possibility that is the new best case scenario. He minces his words even less in his paper: "When I say starvation, destruction, migration, disease and war, I mean in your own life. With the power down, soon you won't have water coming out of your tap.
You will depend on your neighbours for food and some warmth. You will become malnourished. You won't know whether to stay or go. You will fear being violently killed before starving to death. The billionaires doing that are just deluded.

But Bendell's paper appears to have hit a unique nerve, especially given that the average scientific paper is estimated to be read by only three or so people. Behind one door is a car; behind the others, goats. Reading it sent him spiralling into depression. If essential data are not available, please contact the editor to obtain them before submitting the report.
